So this is what I've been doing the past three days. We have just built two raised beds (there's another bed that's a mirror image of this one to the right). We felt we needed to do something to deter the rabbits, slugs, and French Bulldogs that devour our vegetables. My husband ordered 5 cubic yards of topsoil to fill the newly-built raised beds. Five cubic yards didn't sound like a lot to me, but when I found I could barely exit our garage after the delivery truck dumped it in our alley, I felt entirely different about how much 5 cubic yards actually is. Rain and more cold is on the way, so it most likely will be next week before anything is planted into the garden. Next on our list? We're going to build a harvest table for the patio. I need a table to seat at least 10 people. Hopefully, after that is finished, we can begin hosting dinners for friends -- with vegetables from the garden! TAKE a LOOK:

Hi Merisi... Thanks for stopping by. I am fine and plan to return to posting next week. The raised beds are built, the gardens planted (practically), the catering job has passed, and by the end of the week my daughter will be in France studying French cinema and architecture. Oh... all that's left to do is build the 12-foot long harvest table for the patio. But my husband is on that and I'll hopefully have it by the end of the weekend (?) Like I told him last night, "The harvest table and a dinner party will be a great photo shoot for LivingTastefully!".

Eileen, what an impressive project -- good for you and your handsome in-house hired hand. The topsoil looks really great and I have one tip for you. Add as much compost to it as you can, as it adds some great microbes to the soil, a living network which encourages plant growth. Also in the fall, mow up all your leaves and clippings and cover the top of the beds. Worms love leaf mold and it will enrich you soil with their presence. The layer also acts as a layer of insulation and can easily be turned under before planting time. Can't wait to see what you plant and pics of the alfresco dining venue.

Tom -- Thank you for the suggestions. They are ALWAYS welcome! I have just begun composting myself. Have never done it before. Hopefully once that's up and going, I will see big changes in my gardens.
